The Atkins Diet: Hype?

The Atkins has been around for a while now. Atkins first appeared in the late 1970s and has grown very popular these recent years in response to the low-fat diet fad. As people on a diet had trouble with low-fat diets, they searched for a new solution and Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution book found a new audience.

A lot of people have turned to the Atkins diet and there has been a lot of hype as a result. But what are the basic principles of the Atkins diet?

The Atkins diet is guided around the question "why we get fat". According to Dr. Atkins, the over-consumption of carbohydrates and simple sugars leads to weight gain. The way your body burns the carbohydrates you eat have more to do with your waist than the amount of fat or calories that you eat. In his book, Atkins outlines a phenomenon called “insulin resistance.” He theorizes that many overweight people have cells that do not work correctly.

When you consume excess carbohydrates and sugar, your body notices your sugar levels are raised. The body produces insulin from the pancreas in order to retain sugar as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells for extra energy later on. However, your body can only retain so much glycogen at once. AWhen your body reaches this limit, this causes the body to store the excess as fat. This will happen to everyone who eats too many carbohydrates.

However, people who are insulin resistant have an even harder time of storing and burning of Carbohydrates. The more insulin you produce your body starts to become resistant to the insulin. Overtime, the pancreas pumps more insulin and cells become resistant to insulin. The body does this to protect itself from the toxic effects of high insulin. They create less glycogen and more fat.

As a result, people who are insulin resistant gain lots more weight. The carbohydrates that we consume get stored as fat instead of being stored as energy. Some of the side effects are fatigue, the inability to focus, lack of memory, loss of creativity, very low blood sugar (which could turn into hypoglycemia),bloating of the intestins, sleepiness, depression and increased blood sugar. When you are insulin resistant you have more worries than just extra weight.

The cure for people who have an insulin resistant body is a low-carb diet. The focus of the Atkins diet is a reduction of carbohydrates. The foods that are not allowed on the Atkins diet include simple sugars (like cookies, sodas and sweets) and complex carbohydrates (like bread, rice and grains). Even the Carbohydrates that we are taught will make us healthy are restricted in the Atkins diet such as oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat bread, are restricted on this diet.

On this diet you must reduce your carbohydrate consumption to less than 40 grams a day. This will put your body in a state of ketosis. Ketosis allows your body to burn fat as fuel. According to Dr. Atkins’ research, the ketosis state will also affect insulin production and it will stop more fat from being formed. You begin to use stored fat as fuel and in return begin to lose weight. One of the major benefits of ketosis is that your body will not crave carbohydrates as it did before. If you’ve been consuming lots of carbs, you may have found that you can never have enough carbs. With carbohydrate restriction and ketosis comes a reduction in carbohydrate cravings. People who have been on the Atkins diet for long period of time report that they do not crave carbohydrates as they once did.

The Best Ways to Finally Quit Smoking

Any doctor would agree that stopping smoking is the best way for any smoker to improve the quality and length of their lives. It may not be easy, but it can be done. And of course, like any other challenge you undertake, it is best to have complete information about the options you have for quitting smoking, what to expect while you're quitting, and who to run to for help to be able to successfully achieve your goal.

So, why is it difficult to quit smoking? This is because of nicotine. Nicotine is a drug found naturally in tobacco leaves. It is as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Nicotine acts as a natural pesticide that wards insects away from munching on tobacco leaves. With this in mind, think of what nicotine can do to the human body in massive dosages.

Nicotine creates pleasant feelings that make a smoker crave for more nicotine. It also appears to act as a kind of depressant by deterring the information flow between nerve cells. The more a person's tolerance to nicotine gets, the more cigarettes they feel they need to smoke.

The next thing to consider is a good reason to quit smoking. Why should a smoker quit? You should be doing it for your health and for those around you. Smoking increases the chances of developing diseases like cancer, heart problems, lung diseases, among other medical complications. Not only does it put your health on the line, the people around you are at risk from inhaling second hand smoke.

Quitting smoking will help smokers live longer and have more productive lives. It will lower your chances of developing heart and lung diseases. It will, also, gradually bring your body back to a better shape than when you were still smoking. Immediate results of quitting smoking include: a better smelling breath, whiter teeth, no more bad smelling hair and clothes, and being able to taste food better.

The best way to quit smoking may be different from person to person as it depends on which method worked for them. For some, it is just one specific method. For others, it may be a combination of two or more methods. But whatever the case may be, you are the only person that can decide which of the following treatments work best for you. Here are some of the most commonly used treatment for smoking cessation:
1. Medications. Sedatives and relaxants may help a smoker get by the effects of the withdrawal symptom during the first week of quitting. These are prescribed by doctors and may be habit forming on its own. So always follow your doctor's prescribed dosing amount and schedule to avoid further complications.
2. Smoking aids. This may be in the form of nicotine patches or nicotine gum. The primary use of smoking aids is to prevent a person from relapsing due to nicotine cravings. And they help by supplying small amounts of nicotine into the bloodstream in another form instead of lighting a cigarette.
3. Relaxation exercises. A smoker may enroll himself in yoga classes or practice deep breathing exercises to calm the nerves and reduce restlessness and anxiety due to the withdrawal symptom.
4. Hypnotherapy. A smoker willingly submits himself to a licensed hypnotherapist where his mind will be opened to positive and suggestive ideas to help a smoker continue quitting.

Cigarette cravings will never completely go away. It'll always come and go. So if you feel the urge to light a cigarette, wait it out and surely you'll find that these cravings will go away. It also helps to think back at all the hardships you've gone through just to quit. Would you put all that effort to waste for just a stick of cigarette?

It can prevent symptoms of asthma, nasal allergy, sinusitis and eczema.

Dust mite protective covers for pillows, mattresses and box springs are also an excellent gift for those who are allergic to dust mites. Many individuals with asthma also have other conditions such as eczema, a skin condition that is made worse when in contact with some fabrics, such as wool. Cotton clothing and bedding is always a good choice for people with eczema.

(8)Books

Allergies and AsthmaBooks are great for books lovers. There are many great books on coping life with allergies. One of which should be in every home is Jeffrey C. May’s My House Is Killing Me!: The Home Guide for Families with Allergies and Asthma.

Treating Your Nasal Allergy Symptoms

As a nasal allergy sufferer, Tutera knows first-hand how something unexpected, like nasal allergy symptoms, can ruin a backyard barbecue or a birthday bash. "For my events, I always take nasal allergy symptoms into consideration because they are a party-pitfall that can easily be avoided."

By following Tutera's simple tips, any party host or guest can help prevent nasal allergy symptoms from affecting the party experience.

Location, Location, Location

When looking into venues, there are a few things to consider that will keep your party sizzling and keep your guests with nasal allergies from suffering.

For indoor parties, make sure carpets, drapes and upholstered furniture are well vacuumed prior to the event to prevent dust mite accumulation. While you may think your four-legged friend is good party entertainment, it's best to keep pets in a separate room during the festivities, as pet dander can also trigger nasal allergy symptoms.

If an outdoor hot spot tops your list, host a beach bash over a park party-a sandy beach provides less exposure to allergens compared to a grassy area.

Setting the Scene

To decorate a party scene, Tutera recommends using a simple floral arrangement that adds color and texture to the event.

"Remember that some flowers are more prone to cause nasal allergy symptoms than others," said Tutera. "Use large, brightly colored flowers like roses for party accents, as their pollens are less likely to trigger nasal allergy symptoms."

Other allergy-friendly decorating options include unscented candles or dried flowers, which can be great table pieces. And for those on a budget, Tutera recommends checking out your local farmer's market for fresh flowers that cost less than you'd think.

Treating Your Nasal

Allergy Symptoms

Even for the host with the most, it's impossible to keep every allergen off the guest list. Tutera recommends hosts and partygoers with nasal allergies visit a doctor who can prescribe an appropriate treatment for their symptoms.

"Many of my patients are concerned with the way nasal allergy symptoms affect them in social settings like parties. To help treat nasal allergy symptoms, I prescribe an intranasal steroid," said Dr. Matthew Clarke, a board-certified family and occupational medicine physician in private practice in New York City.

Intranasal steroids, which are available for adults and children, include NASONEX® (mometasone furoate monohydrate) Nasal Spray, 50 mcg (calculated on the anhydrous basis).

"By planning ahead and controlling your nasal allergy symptoms prior to an event, you can enjoy the celebration without worrying about your symptoms," said Tutera.

NASONEX® is approved to treat nasal allergy symptoms in patients as young as 2 years of age. Take regularly, as effectiveness depends upon regular use. Maximum treatment effect is generally reached within 1 to 2 weeks. NASONEX is the only once-daily prescription intranasal steroid clinically proven to help prevent most seasonal nasal allergy symptoms in adults and children 12 years of age and older when NASONEX® is started 2 to 4 weeks prior to allergy season. NASONEX® is also the first and only intranasal steroid approved for the treatment of nasal polyps in adults 18 years of age and older. Side effects were generally mild and included headache, viral infection, sore throat, nosebleeds and coughing.

Understanding The Cause of Allergy

People who are afflicted with allergies seek to find out everything they can about the cause of allergy.

The cause of allergy, in a particular individual is not always obvious, but it is acknowledged that there is a genetic factor. However, whist the cause of allergy may be due to a families medical circumstances, it signifies that members of the family are predisposed to the illness, and not that they are certain to be a victim. It is fairly common for one sibling in a family to be afflicted, whilst their sisters and brothers are not. It means that, even if there is a genetic aspect, the cause of allergy in a particular child, is not absolutely apparent, although it is more frequent in males.

It seems that modern lifestyle has something to do with the cause of allergy, and contaminated air has been partly to blame. Whatever the reason, allergies are on the increase, so the deeper the cause of allergy is understood, the better the allergy treatments that can be made available. It has been noted that when children suffered viral diseases, such as measles, they did not develop allergies. Thankfully measles has all but been eradicated in the West, but prior to block immunization, it was a quite common, but nasty and infectious disease.

Despite the progress in modern medicine, there is a hygiene issue connected with the cause of allergy. For sure, the affluent age we now enjoy has brought many benefits, but it seems that when kids were raised in different circumstances, they didn't get as many allergies. Moreover the liberal use of antibiotics in children has been considered as lowering resistance, if not being the cause of allergy.

Food Allergies

Food is a very common cause of allergy, from which a substantial percentage of Americans suffer. Foods, which can be the cause of allergy, include:

Peanuts, Shellfish, Milk, Eggs, Wheat

For instance peanuts are thought to be the cause of allergy in nearly two million Americans. They can be responsible for serious conditions, that include anaphylaxis that can be fatal. Many people who are allergic to peanuts, are also allergic to tree nuts such as walnuts, pecans, almonds, and cashews.

Airborne Allergens

Allergens like pollen are a cause of allergy that seem to have been around for ever,

Many people are allergic to pets, and many mistakenly think that the fur or hair of the pet is the cause of the allergy. However, they are misadvised, because it is the saliva, which is left over when dogs, or more often cats, groom themselves. The saliva dries out, and when discarded becomes an airborne cause of allergy, resulting in sneezing and wheezing.

Molds are another frequent cause of allergy, and they are not confined to old buildings. They can be a problem throughout the year, and thrive in damp areas, especially where airflow is inadequate or restricted. There are modern buildings that have been poorly designed, where mold and condensation are real problems. Mold is not just horrid to look at, but as a cause of allergy, it can be a serious health hazard.

Medicine Allergens

There are people who are allergic to certain medicines, including penicillin, and other antibiotics. They are unlucky, that the drugs that have been so useful for others are the cause of allergy for them.

Chemical Allergies

Environmental substances, including chemicals, can be a cause of allergy. There are so many industrial, agricultural and even household products, which contain chemicals that may be a cause of allergy, and other health problems as well. It is wise to be cautious, and whenever feasible seek out natural alternatives, which are preferred to many of the questionable manufactured goods, with scary labels on their containers.

Insect Bites and Stings

There are various insects that may inflict bites or stings that could be the cause of allergy. For instance, yellow jackets (wasps) can be a seasonal hazard. Most people try to avoid a yellow jacket sting, but for some allergic individuals they can be dangerous, and may even be fatal in rare instances.

General

To understand the cause of allergy is to be in the right circumstances to deal with it. You will know that prevention is always better than cure, and the best way to beat an allergy, is to avoid the allergens that start the symptoms. That may not always be achievable, as the millions who suffer from hay fever could testify. When all is said and done you don't want to exist in a bubble, although even that has been necessary, on extremely rare occasions, for a few people afflicted with many allergies.

Avoiding insects, particular foods, airborne allergens, and the like is a situation you can get used to if you must. There are highly qualified allergists and doctors, from whom to seek advice, and well tested treatments are available. There are OTC, over the counter formulations, but an allergy is an illness, and as such it is in your own interests to consult your doctor, or other qualified medical practitioner, about what form of treatment is best for you.

Not Always A Girl's Best Friend

People like jewelry --- it's an obsession that is practically based on instinct. People tend to like shiny things and, if done right, jewelry is very attractive no matter what the occasion. However, there are some caveats to be considered when talking about and deciding on the timely use of jewelry. Factors like lifestyle and finances are understandable deterrents to keeping jewelry around, whether in mass quantities or just a few select pieces. On certain occasions, for certain people, there are other potential problems. While an allergy to nickel is considerably minor as far as everyday medical concerns go, it can still get rather annoying if you're into jewelry. After all, nearly every form of jewelry on the market today has some amount of nickel in it.

Nickel allergies can sometimes appear similar to a mild skin infection, though it is often readily noticeable that the signs disappear with time. The most common sign of the allergy taking effect would be the skin developing a deep red color in the area that had contact with nickel. Some of the surrounding area may also develop some redness. In some cases, the redness can also appear like a rash and may cause itchiness or mild discomfort. In extreme cases, blisters may form on the skin, usually with a lot of moisture or pus. The itchiness can become unbearable, depending on how much nickel was involved and how long the skin was in contact with it. On some instances, the itchiness can also lead to mild inflammation and may render the hands virtually unusable for a short period.

The allergy, sadly, has no known cure and can sometimes randomly occur. Like most allergies, an allergic reaction to nickel is completely random and may appear on someone who has never been allergic to it before. Prolonged exposure is not needed for someone to develop the problem, because even a short amount of contact with nickel can trigger an allergic episode. The allergy is actually fairly common, being considered among the most common causes for allergic attacks outside of seasonal factors. The exact cause of the sensitivity is still unknown, but nickel-based earrings and needles (used for piercings) often cause a reaction faster than anything else.

The skin does not normally react the first time contact is made. In most circumstances, symptoms such as redness may not even appear for two days after the initial contact. Inflammation, particularly rare for this allergy, is often only apparent after nearly a week. There are some instances when the symptoms manifest within a short period, but this is typically the result of prolonged or regular exposure to nickel. Most cases of this occur because the person has a lot of jewelry on their person, or wears a few pieces for prolonged periods. There are exceptions to this, but the previously mentioned situations are considered typical.

Statistically speaking, women are remarkably more likely to develop an allergic reaction to nickel than men are. This has traditionally been attributed to the piercing of the ears, which leaves those areas exposed to nickel for days at a time while the wound heals properly. However, going over the statistics over a period of time shows that the disparity between males with the allergy and females has been decreasing. Whether this is because of the increasing popularity of body piercings and earrings for males is still unknown, but it is considered the most likely cause. As it stands, there are no known biological or physiological factors behind the disparity.

Living With Metal Allergies

Metal allergy, which is a form of contact dermatitis, is a rather common skin condition. Quite a few people may have this condition and not even realize it. There are plenty of people who believe they can’t wear anything but gold, or platinum or even silver. Often this it not true and many people do not realize that in most situations they can find a less expensive alternative. It all depends on the metal content. For instance the most common metal that causes a reaction is nickel. Nickel is used in a wide variety of jewelry including gold, although not too often.

Signs and Symptoms of Metal Allergy

The symptoms of a metal allergy is reddening of the skin where there has been contact with the metal, note the kind of allergy it is classified as ‘contact dermatitis’. Which there are many types of allergens that cause contact dermatitis, such as poison oak or even for some people wool. An itching and or burning sensation usually accompanies the reddening of the skin in the area that has been in contact with the metal. In some severe cases a blistering rash can occur and may resemble pimples. The skin may reveal scaly, raw and thickened, sometimes oozing, crusting or draining may occur. As well as swelling, tenderness or warmth of the skin exposed to the metal.

Complications and Treatment

Infections may occur so it is important that if you have broken out to keep the area clean and dry, but do not touch it too often as this can irritate it more. The best thing is to clean the area once or twice a day and keep it covered. If the itching or burning is too much to bear you can always use a cortisone cream, for swelling you can use cold compresses on the skin.

Severity

The severity of the reaction often depends on several factors such as the duration of the contact, whether or not the skin has been broken, how sensitive you are to the metal causing the reaction, and the concentration of the metal you are sensitive to. For example if you are allergic to nickel, and a piece of sterling silver that contains a small percentage may not break you out but white gold with a high percentage of nickel might. Not that all sterling silver or white gold contains nickel but some pieces might. There is no specific formula for alloying silver or gold and all manufacturers have their own recipe.

Prevention

Obviously the best method of preventing the uncomfortable results of a metal allergy is to avoid the metal causing the sometimes-painful reaction. This as we all know is not always possible. For instance what are we suppose to do when a belt buckle or zipper on some of our favorite pieces of clothing starts irritating our skin? Are we just supposed to throw them out?

Protecting Your Skin

The best thing is to see you physician and have a patch test done to identify the specific allergen, this can usually be accomplished with three office visits, or sometimes less if you have self tested by purposely exposing yourself to the alleged culprit. But sometimes it may be a favorite pair of earrings and the easiest fix is to apply a coating of clear fingernail polish to the metal that contacts the skin. Although this will eventually wear, on an item you use regularly it can last for 2-3 weeks before you need to apply another coat. Or if it is bra hooks you could just get a small strip of comfortable fabric and place is as a barrier. Some cases you can just take an antihistamine.

Get Rid of Cedar Fever Safely And Naturally

Mountain cedar allergy season typically starts in the early winter of South Texas and extends for at least a couple of months. It is those months that are typically the worst time of the year for allergy sufferers. The San Antonio and Austin areas are especially bad due to the high concentration of mountain cedar trees and the relatively windy weather that is common to the winter months that spreads the pollen around.

For allergy sufferers in the San Antonio area, mountain cedar is one of the worst pollens by far, primarily because the pollen counts can go extremely high and remain so for many days at a time. Mountain cedar pollen counts can occasionally reach such a high level that the pollen is actually considered an air pollutant, with the air actually appearing somewhat hazy?).

The pollen typically overpowers the symptom-control of just about every common allergy treatment known to medicine. Even prescription medications and inhalers may not be a match for the clouds of pollen.

Fortunately, there is a new approach to this problem. Energy medicine techniques, based on the thousand-year-old healing traditions of acupuncture (although the new methods do not require needles and are totally painless), are now available that can effectively "desensitize" allergy sufferers to many allergens, including mountain cedar pollen. These strange-looking methods take effect quickly - within 24 hours and can eliminate mountain cedar allergies for the remaining months of the cedar fever season, and often for future seasons for years to come.

Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique, or NAET for short, is the most well-known and widely-practiced of these methods, and is named after Dr. Devi Nambudripad, an acupuncturist and chiropractor. Devi Nambudripad. This technique was discovered accidentally by Dr. Nambudripad when she learned how to eliminate her own allergies. Reportedly, Dr. She herself was afflicted with many food allergies and because of this was on an extremely limited diet. One evening she was fixing dinner for her husband and was cutting up carrots (which she was allergic to). Apparently, just getting a little bit of carrot juice on her skin was enough to trigger an allergy attack. Dr. Nambudripad immediately stopped what she was doing and decided to perform an acupuncture treatment on herself and lie down to rest. She actually fell asleep with the acupuncture needles still in place, and when she awoke, she noticed that she was feeling much better. She noticed that in her haste she had failed to wash off all of the carrot juice from her hands and there were still bits of carrot on her skin, but she was no longer reacting to it. On a hunch, she tried eating a small amount of carrot and to her excitement, she did not have any adverse reaction to it. From there, the technique was developed and is now used for desensitizing all kinds of allergens - including inhaled pollens such as the case with mountain cedar allergy.

A number of other allergy desensitization methods have been developed based on NAET. I have been using a method called Allergy and Sensitivity Elimination and Reprogramming Technique (or ASERT for short) for the past several years with great success. While not identical to NAET, the principles are similar. Instead of acupuncture needles, ASERT uses "cold" laser to stimulate acupuncture points, and the procedure is completely painless and well-tolerated even by very young children.

Both NAET and ASERT defy a believable description, but they are remarkably fast acting, taking effect in 24 hours or less, and the desensitization effect lasts for several months to several years in the majority of cases. The procedure to desensitize mountain cedar pollen, or any other single allergen, is easily done within just one 20 to 30 minute office visit in most cases. Following the desensitization procedure, sinus congestion, watering eyes, and other allergy symptoms start to subside within a matter of hours.) ease off quickly and the need for antihistamines, decongestants, and other medications is typically eliminated.

So, if cedar fever has you in it's grasp, or if you suffer from any other allergies, there's good news - you don't have to suffer anymore!
